Mental fatigue is a prevalent issue that many of us have encountered at some point in our lives. It's that feeling of exhaustion that clouds our ability to think clearly and perform tasks efficiently. Whether it's the demands of a long workday, strenuous study sessions, or other mentally taxing activities, mental fatigue can be a real obstacle.
Binaural beats have captured the attention of scientists and individuals seeking ways to improve focus and relaxation, and in this study researchers investigated whether binaural beats could be a remedy for mental fatigue.
Method: The Experiment
The researchers conducted a series of tests on participants. They started with baseline assessments and an electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure brain activity. Then, participants were given a mentally taxing task for 20 minutes. During this task, they listened to different types of sounds: 15 Hz binaural beats, 40 Hz binaural beats, relaxing music, or a 240 Hz pure tone. After the task, participants were tested again.
Explanation of Terms
In the context of the study, a “240 Hz pure tone” refers to a specific tone (sound) that has a frequency of 240 hertz (Hz). Hertz is a unit of measurement for frequency, and it indicates the number of cycles or vibrations per second. A “pure tone” typically refers to a sound that consists of a single, unchanging frequency, as opposed to a complex sound made up of multiple frequencies, like a piece of music
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a medical test that measures and records the electrical activity of the brain over a period of time. It is a non-invasive procedure that involves placing electrodes (small, flat metal discs) on the scalp. These electrodes are connected to a machine that amplifies and records the electrical signals generated by the brain.
The primary purpose of an EEG is to monitor and analyze brain activity. It can help in diagnosing various neurological conditions and disorders, such as epilepsy, seizures, brain injuries, sleep disorders, and certain cognitive impairments. By examining the patterns of electrical activity in the brain, doctors and neurologists can gain insights into brain function and identify any abnormalities.
During an EEG, the patient typically sits or lies down in a relaxed state while the electrodes pick up the brain's electrical signals. The resulting data is displayed as a series of waveforms on a computer screen or paper printout, and these patterns can provide valuable information about brain health and function.
Results: What Happened
The accuracy rate of the 40 Hz binaural beats group and the relaxing music group decreased in the middle stage of the task, while the 15 Hz binaural beats group and the 240 Hz pure tone group remained unchanged in all stages of the task.
The EEG results showed that after fatigue inducement, the average path length of the 15 Hz binaural beats group decreased, and local efficiency showed an increasing tendency, indicating enhanced brain network connectivity. Meanwhile, the 240 Hz pure tone group showed enhanced functional connectivity, suggesting a state of mental fatigue in the group.
Conclusion
This study indicates that listening to 15 Hz binaural beats can be an effective way to combat mental fatigue. It helps maintain working memory, enhances brain connectivity and reduces the decline in brain function associated with mental fatigue.
These findings have both scientific and practical significance. It means you can listen to binaural beats music in your every day routine to overcome mental fatigue, poor concentration and subsequent low productivity.

What to Do Next?
15 Hz is a frequency at the very start of the Beta state. You can try Beta programs like Super Brain Power, and Energy Express. You can also listen to Alpha frequency programs such as our Zen Focus and Flow State programs, both of which will help with mental fatigue.
