No one likes the idea of failure, let alone failing. And that's why the risk of failure and the emotions that accompany the risk can prevent us from even trying.
We often become so motivated to avoid failure that it exceeds our motivation to succeed.
This results in stagnation. We procrastinate, we look for an easier option, and often completely avoid taking on the challenge because we fear the feelings that may arise if we don’t succeed.
Whether it's addressing weight loss, applying for a new job or starting a business, taking a course that requires an exam to pass, or competing in sport, we often choose the risk-free option of staying in our comfort zone.
But this is not a recipe for happiness.
Because we don't come anywhere near reaching our potential. We never get to find out what we are capable of .
And those things that we really want to do in life fester in the back of our minds.
We distract ourselves with TV, social media, and junk food, but in those moments of silence, when we're alone with our thoughts, those goals and desires are still there, waiting.
For this reason, we must address fear of failure and tackle life head on.
Failure: A Fear of Shame & Disappointment
The thing about fear of failure is that it is largely comprised of a fear of shame.
We develop a belief in childhood that failure means we aren’t good enough, and that others will think the same: others being our parents, friends, colleagues, and kids.
We fear disappointment, frustration, sadness, regret, embarrassment, and letting down those we love. This is particularly prevalent in those with pushy parents.
But not trying at all has far worse consequences.
To not try at all means avoiding the things we really want to do in life. It means never fulfilling your potential, never chasing a dream, never reaping the rewards that come with the journey.
To have the job you want, the skill you want to acquire, the knowledge you seek; you have to start the journey and give it your best shot.
And on that journey you will unlock many new paths to travel and experiences to learn from.
What happens is that the endeavor becomes so much bigger and so much more rewarding than the initial goal.
It is everything you learn along the way and the setbacks you overcome that help you grow as a person and truly experience life.
There is no growth in doing nothing. This is your life, and you must allow possibility and opportunity to unveil for your life to unravel.
Moreover, consider this: Is it really failure to have completed 2 steps out of a possible 3?
Surely failure is never having taken a step in the first place, right?
Our greatest glory is not in never failing but in rising every time we fail. ~ Confucius.
Fear of Failure: Rooted in the Subconscious Mind
So, how can we get past self-limiting beliefs like:
“I can’t do it”, “I probably won’t succeed”, “If I fail I’ll look stupid”, “I don't want to disappoint anyone”?
Well, you must overcome these negative beliefs rooted in your subconscious mind. Such beliefs have been reinforced since childhood and control your everyday behaviors.
As you sow in your subconscious mind, so shall you reap in your body and environment. ~ Joseph Murphy
The “subconscious” is the part of your mind that operates below your normal level of waking consciousness.
While that sounds a bit spiritual, it's actually scientific.
Think of it like this: your conscious mind is reading the words on this page and understanding the meaning, but your subconscious is working in the background, absorbing or rejecting information based on an existing perception you have of the world around you
This perception of the world began forming when you were an infant.
In fact, by the time you were 7 or 8 years old, you would have already developed a solid foundation of belief based on programming from your parents, your nursery teachers, the cartoons you watched, and other environmental influences.
The Subconscious Mind Absorbs Everything
The subconscious mind soaks up information like a sponge and can reject or store what it receives.
During your childhood, your subconscious mind absorbed everything because you didn’t have any pre-existing beliefs to contradict or override what it perceived. As children, we simply accept all new information as true.
For example: if you tell a child from the age of 2 that hitting people and shouting when you feel angry is okay, the child will store that information and use that default response when angry.
Even though, with age, the child will begin to understand that this reaction is wrong based on the behavior of the majority of others outside of their immediate environment, the child is likely to still suffer anger management issues.
This is how past experiences can continue to negatively affect us in the present.
For example: if you are labeled stupid and worthless, or you are constantly told: “Don't let me down” or “Make sure you win/pass”, your subconscious mind will store this information and it will influence you decision making.
You will fear taking on challenges because you believe you will fail. You will believe you aren't good enough and in many situations won't even try.
It isn't just other people's words and influences that can affect our subconscious mind, but our general life experiences too.
If you fail an important exam, fall over and feel ashamed during a race, or forget your lines in a play; this can trigger a fear or failure, a fear of being embarrassed, a deep rooted belief that you aren't good enough.
The good news is that subconscious reprogramming can help us get past the negative and self-limiting beliefs we hold in the subconscious mind.
Overcome Fear of Failure by Subliminal Programming
As we've discussed, your subconscious mind has immense power over your emotions, feelings and actions.
From the types of food you eat to the actions you take, the emotions you feel and how you react to the challenges of life, everything is guided by your subconscious beliefs and interpretations.
Think of the subconscious mind like the auto-pilot mode of an airplane. It is pre-programmed to fly a specific path and won't deviate unless you program a different route into the computer.
You need to do the same with the negative beliefs rooted in your subconscious mind. Only then will your change your behavior change for the better.
Our Meditation Program
The good news is that our Overcome Fear of Failure meditation program can help you do that.
Along with our signature binaural beats, which entrain the mind for positive states of wellbeing, the Fear of Failure meditation program contains positive subliminal affirmations.
The affirmations bypass your conscious mind and are absorbed by your subconscious mind.
They are embedded under relaxing music, just below your hearing level – so you won't actually *hear the affirmations while the music is playing
*We do also provide an audible affirmations version for an additional listening experience.
Affirmations are an effective way to install positive messages into your subconscious; because they are concise and clear and delivered in a language that your subconscious understands.
Because your conscious mind is not aware of the subliminal affirmations underlying the music, it can’t put up barriers against them and reject the affirmations before they reach the subconscious mind.
With regular listening, your subconscious mind begins to accept the suggestions as true, effectively reprogramming your fear of failure with a desire to overcome fear, pursue your goals, and reach your potential.
Once the subconscious mind learns new, positive information around your fear of failure, it will default back to this information whenever it is required.
With each passing day, it’ll become easier for you to overcome fear of failure and its associated emotions because you are addressing the issues at the source, which is your subconscious mind.
Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality ~ Earl Nightingale
