Music has an extraordinary ability to relieve pain and discomfort. This is well-documented in the history of ancient societies, for whom music and healing went hand in hand.
Indeed, the Chinese character for medicine includes the character for music, and in ancient Greece music was used to ease stress and soothe pain.
In the modern day, scientific research continues to discover how valuable music can be as a natural therapy for pain and feelings of discomfort.
A study of 34 patients suffering from chronic headaches were given 8 sessions of sound trance therapy. Patients reported fewer headaches in the following 6-12 months, and significantly improved their ability of pain control.
In a bio-feedback (using music) study on tension headaches, results indicated that patients' headache levels and medication requirements were low during bio-feedback but increased when bio-feedback was terminated.
Such research over the years has led to medical programs like the Mayo Clinic's Healing Enhancement Program to use music to help ease pain and anxiety for its patients, and the UK's National Health Service to recommend listening to relaxing music as a headache cure.
Cure Your ‘Tension Headache'
A tension headache is the type most of us are used to experiencing. The tension headache may vary in severity of pain and discomfort, but is generally distracting and can make you feel stressed, anxious and unable to concentrate or socialise properly.
The exact cause can be unclear, but headaches are usually linked to stress, tiredness, poor posture or dehydration. Excessive caffeine or sugar intake – and indeed other stimulants – can also be contributing factors.
The majority of us will suffer a headache from time to time. For some, the symptoms are a tightness around the head and throbbing at the temples, and for others its a discomforting hazy fog and heaviness above the eyes that just won't go away.
One thing is clear, however: a headache is the body's way of telling us we need to take a break. We need to completely relax for a while, to allow the brain to power-down and rejuvenate.

Underneath this blissful composition, we've layered delta frequencies that play at 1.2 Hz and 0.5 Hz (hertz); both of which are associated with the relief of tension headaches. These frequencies seek to slow your brainwave activity down and may well take you into a state of sleep.

How to Use the Headache Relief Meditation
Headache Relief should be used while lying down or sitting up in a comfortable chair.
Set a low volume on your audio player. The volume should feel comfortable and soothing and not be at a level you find intrusive.
Put on your headphones, press play and close your eyes.
You may find that you fall asleep, so you might choose to set an alarm to wake you up. However, make sure the alarm alert is gentle and not too alarming or piercing.
Just lie back and let yourself drift away as the waves of the seashore wash over your mind.
To assist in settling your mind, you might like to try visualising being on the beach: Watch the waves caress the shore, and enjoy the light breeze blowing across your face to cool you from the sun.
